Sodium hypophosphite is an inorganic compound , salt of an alkali metal sodium and hypophosphorous acid with the formula Na (PH2O2)
Colorless crystals, readily soluble in water, forms a crystalline hydrate. The solution is neutral. Dissolves in ethanol, poorly dissolves in liquid ammonia.
It is used as a reducing agent when applying coatings of Ni, Co, Sn to metals and plastics, an antioxidant (prevents discoloration of alkyd resins during their production), stabilizer PVC and polyurethanes, reagent for the photometric determination of As (III) and Sb (III), etc.
