Used as varnish thinners, paints, mastics, etc. Used in the synthesis of dyes. Para-xylene is used as a raw material for the synthesis of terephthalic acid - an intermediate product for the production of polyethylene terephthalate.
Purification of xylenes used as solvents is similar to purification of toluene, with the difference that they do not form an azeotropic mixture with water but boil much higher than it; thus, they can also be cleaned up with a simple distillation.
