Dibutyl phthalate is phthalic acid dibutyl ester (DBP). In appearance, dibutyl phthalate is an oily, colorless liquid. Dibutyl phthalate is poorly soluble in water - about 1 percent, at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Dibutyl phthalate is readily soluble in acetone, ethanol and other organic solvents. The boiling point of this substance is 340 degrees, with decomposition.
At a pressure of 10 mm. rt. Art. boiling point 206 degrees. In industrial production, dibutyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer for products based on rubber, polyvinyl chloride, and cellulose ethers.
