Hexane (n-hexane) is a saturated hydrocarbon C6H14 belonging to the class of alkanes.
Colorless liquid with a faint odor (reminiscent of dichloroethane). Refractive index n20D 1.37506. Due to the low octane number (25), hexane is an undesirable component of synthetic gasoline.
Hexane is used: - in the extraction of vegetable oils, as an organic solvent. - as a solvent and thinner for paints, varnishes. - as a degreasing agent ; - as a non-polar solvent for carrying out chemical reactions; - as an extractant of vegetable oils from natural raw materials; - as a liquid in low-temperature thermometers;
Isohexanes (2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane) - are used as additives to motor fuel that improve its quality. hexane is the best way to dissolve paraffin plugs.
