    Modern internal combustion engines are mainly focused on the use of liquid fuels from oil. However, the world's oil reserves are not as large as the resources of solid organic raw materials, and are very unevenly distributed across different regions of the planet. These circumstances create preconditions for the development of industrial technologies for the production of motor fuels from raw materials of non-petroleum origin.

    At the International Conference on Energy Resources, which took place in 1979 in Montreal (Canada), light and medium oils, natural gases and gas condensates were classified as traditional energy resources of hydrocarbons. and unconventional ones - heavy oils and solid bitumens, as well as liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons obtained from bituminous and brown coals, bituminous sandstones, oil shale, gas hydrates, peat, plant biomass, industrial, agricultural and urban waste.

    Liquid and gaseous fuels for mobile units obtained from unconventional raw materials are called alternative motor fuels. Such installations include carburetor automobile and piston aircraft engines, automotive, diesel and marine diesel engines, turboprop and turbojet engines of aviation technology, gas turbine ship installations.

    Alternative raw materials.

    The feasibility of using one or another type of alternative motor fuels is determined by the cost and sufficient reserves of the corresponding primary resources. These figures can vary significantly for different countries and regions. So, some countries (Russia, China, USA) have huge reserves of fossil coal. Countries with tropical climates produce significant amounts of plant biomass every year.

    Many types of alternative feedstock differ from petroleum by lower hydrogen content and higher oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur content. Therefore, in the process of their processing into alternative liquid and gaseous fuels, it is necessary to remove unwanted heteroatoms, the mineral component and saturate the feedstock with hydrogen. To remove the sulfur contained in the fuel, nitrogen and oxygen-containing compounds, hydrotreating processes are used, which allow reducing the content of heteroatomic compounds and unsaturated hydrocarbons in the fuel to the required level and increasing the reliability and service life of the engine.

    The use of solid organic raw materials (coal, shale, biomass) instead of oil requires the use of additional stages (drying, grinding and fractionation, separation of hydrocarbon and mineral components, separation and disposal of slags), which are absent during production of motor fuels from petroleum raw materials.
